SURFOX Test
1. Tool features
SURFOX TEST has been designed and manufactured to identify the typology
of stainless steel through simple tests:
1. Magnetic test (it distinguishes stainless steel AISI 400 series);
2. Test with manganese reagent (it distinguishes stainless steel AISI 200 series
to AISI 300 series);
3. With molybdenum reagent (it distinguishes stainless steel AISI 304 series to
AISI 316 series).

2. Battery installation
1. Unscrew the metal cap (2) of the battery’s place with a at screwdriver or
with a coin.
2. Put inside the batteries (three AA size alkaline batteries of 1.5 V), with the
positive pole down, as indicated on page 4 (9) and screw the metal cap (2).
3.Rellinstallation
Handle with care: The rell (5) is lled with a manganese reagent electrolyte
(irritant solution for skin).
1. Unscrew the plastic cap (3) of the rell’s place with a at screwdriver or with
a coin.
2. Attach on the rell (5) the spring (10) and then put the rell inside its place
with the white tip down.
3. Screw the plastic cap (3).
Note: Seal the rell (5) inside the tester using the plastic cap (2), in order to
reduce the evaporation of the electrolytic solution contained.

SURFOX Test
4. How to distinguish stainless steel
4.1 Magnetic test (B, page 4)
AISI 400 series stainless steel (martensitic and ferritic) are magnetic steels. In
order to verify if a stainless steel belongs to the AISI 400 series is to test the
stainless steel surface using the magnet located in the cap (6) on the rell. If
there is a magnetic attraction,then the sample is AISI 400 stainless steel. If
there is no magnetic attraction, then further testing is necessary.
4.2 Test with manganese reagent (C, page 4)
AISI 200 and AISI 300 series stainless steel can be recognized for their different
concentration of manganese in their chemical composition:
SURFOX TEST allows to you nd, through a reagent contained in the rell (5)
and a simple electrochemical test, if there’s a concentration of manganese
higher than 5% in the tested metal.
Test:
1. Verify the operation of the rell (5) touching a little piece of blotting paper by
its tip: if it doesn’t spread, then it is necessary to replace the rell because
it’s spent (par. 3).
2. Put a blotting paper on the sample surface area that you are testing (11).
3. Remove the cover of the rell (6).
4. Put the retractable probe (4) on the metal and press downwards until the
rell tip crushes the blotting paper against the metal (C).
5. Hold for 10 seconds.
6. Verify immediately the coloration of the blotting paper (C):
• Red/purple g“Mn” > 5%g stainless steel AISI 200 series.
• Yellow g“Mn” < 5% gstainless steel AISI 300 series.
Note: At the end of the test, the blotting paper’s coloration can change quickly;
verify as soon as possible the color or it will be necessary to do the test again.
Note: After each test, the rell’s tip (5) has to be cleaned by a piece of paper to
eliminate possible residue coming from previous tests.
Steel Solder “Mn” %
AISI 200 5,5 - 10.5%
AISI 300 < 2%

SURFOX Test
4.3 Test with molybdenum reagent (page 4, D)
Stainless steel AISI 304 and AISI 316 series can be distinguished as per the
absence or the presence of molybdenum in their chemical composition:
Once you checked that the tested metal belongs to the AISI 300 series with the
SURFOX TEST, it is possible to establish the eventual presence of molybdenum
in steel by a simple chemical test.
Test:
1. Verify by SURFOX TEST that the metal submitted to test is stainless steel
AISI 300 series (par 4.2);
2. Pour some electrolyte’s molybdenum reagent’s drops (12) on the blotting
paper used for previous test, in the colored zone (D);
3. Verify the color of blotting paper after 1 minute from the beginning of
the chemical reaction:
• White gAbsence of “Mo” gstainless steel AISI 304 series.
• Pink gPresence of “Mo” gstainless steel AISI 316 series.
Note: When the molybdenum reagent is put on the blotting paper, a chemical
reaction starts immediately: the blotting paper’s color will become Maroon Red
for a moment and then it will turn white or pink after only 30 - 60 seconds.
5. Disposal and scrapping
Note: Seal the rell (5) inside the tester using the plastic cap (2), in order to
reduce the evaporation of the electrolytic solution contained.
Packing: This waste is similar to the urban kind.
Spentblottingpapersandrell: The disposal of special waste must be in
compliance with the regulations in force.
Obsolete tools: With reference to CE2002/96 directive (WEEE), the user must
separate the electrical and the electronic components and dispose of them in
the appropriate authorized collection centers or give them back to the seller,
where a new purchase was made.
Steel Solder “Mn” %
AISI 304 absent
AISI 316 2% - 3%
