lntroduction
The
OLA-35
is an optical attenuator designedfor
low back reflectionsignalattenuationonfiber
opticssystemscarriedby single-mode fibers

pm)operatingat
1300
and
1550
nm.
Dueto its excellentreflectioncharacteristics, the
OLA-35
is particularlysuitable for useon back
reflection-sensitive laser systems or on new
WDM
(wavelengthdivisionmultiplex) equipment.
The attenuatormodule is a neutraldensity filter
placedinthe broadenedlight beam betweenthe
input and outputconnections.The attenuation
value is variable between2 and
65
dB
(1
300
nm)
or between
2
and
60
dB
(1550
nm) and depends
onthe positionofthe filter, which is set usingthe
rotary controlonthe front panel.
The minimal insertionloss of

dB includesthe
lossesof bothtest ports.
The actualattenuationis displayedwith a
resolutionof
0.1
dB on the
LC
display.
A
high
linearityis attainedfor the entire attenuation
rangeby individualcalibrationof the display to
matchthe attenuationfilter characteristic. The
OLA-35
isfactory calibratedat
1300
and
1550
nm. It is set to the corresponding nominal
wavelength usingthe slide switch.

OLA-35
The
OLA-35
is loopedintothetest circuit using
test adapters, availablefor all standardconnector
systems (DIN, FC,
ST,
etc.).
The test portsare physicalcontact (PC)types.
This, together with the anti-reflex coated
components inthe attenuator module,
guarantees very low reflectionoperation.
A highreturnloss of

35 dB can be obtained
with the OLA-35. However, it can only be
realizedwhenthe connectingcablesusedalso
havevery low reflectionconnectors(e.g. DIN,
Super FGPC, Radial1VFO). Series K31XX test
cablesfrom
W&G
usethis typeof connector and
aretherefore particularlysuitablefor back
reflection-sensitiveapplications.
In normaloperationthe display of the OLA-35 is
battery-powered.
If the attenuationcan be readdirectly from a bit
error tester or opticalpower levelmeter in the
test circuit, the display can be switchedoff, as
the
OLA-35
stillfunctionsas an attenuator inthis
mode.
