6. OPERATION
6.1. Operating the Monitor
At start up, the LCD shows the firmware version installed, current date and time, current alarm set
points for each sensor installed, and when the next required calibration is due.
During operation, the LCD displays continuous data on gas concentrations and alarm conditions.
Additionally, you can monitor peak values of gas concentrations.

6.3. Backlight
The device is equipped with the backlight LEDs (white) for better viewing the LCD. It automatically
turns on during an alarm condition or other critical moment.
When the device is in the operating mode, pressing the Left or Right Button will illuminate the LCD
for five (5) seconds.

NOTE: The time interval (5 seconds here) depends on the Backlight On time setting value.
The default setting is 30 seconds. The backlight duration is set by the administration
via the software. Refer to the Portable Gas Detector (PGD) Application Software
User Guide.

6.4. Activating the Monitor
To activate the detector, press and hold the Left Operation Button until the countdown timer has
completed and RELEASE displays on the LCD.
The monitor starts and runs through a self-test (refer to Table 6-3: Self-Test Sequence). During the
procedure ensure the following:
• LCD display “PWR ON”
• Monitor emits one audible beep
• LED lights for (1) one second
• Monitor vibrates for (1) second
6.5. Self-Test
When powering up the detector, it goes to the self-test mode.
The LCD shows the self-test sequence while the detector initializes. The sensor installed in the
detector defines which gas type is shown on the LCD.
To start the self-test of the monitor, press and hold down either button for three (3) seconds. Table
6-3: shows the self-test sequence.
NOTE: Only power up the detector in an non-hazardous environment of 20.9% oxygen.
If the Operation Button is held after RELEASE displays, the device will not turn on.
WARNING: IF THE MONITOR DOES NOT OPERATE IN THIS FASHION, DO NOT USE.
TAG IT OUT OF SERVICE. FAILURE TO HEED THIS WARNING COULD
RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
WARNING: IF CAL EXPIRED IS DISPLAYED UPON POWER ON START UP SEQUENCE
INDICATING THE DEVICE DOES NOT HAVE VALID CURRENT
CALIBRATION, PRESS THE RIGHT OPERATION BUTTON TO OVERRIDE
AND IMMEDIATELY CALIBRATE THE DEVICE. A DEVICE THAT HAS NOT
BEEN PROPERLY CALIBRATED CAN LEAD TO DEATH OR INJURY.
WARNING: NEVER OPERATE THE DEVICE IN GAS MONITORING MODE WITH THE
CALIBRATION ADAPTER ATTACHED. THIS CAN CAUSE FALSE
READINGS OF DETECTED GASES. FAILURE TO HEED THIS WARNING
COULD LEAD TO DEATH OR INJURY.
NOTE: The displayed value (for normal mode) appearing on the monitor’s LCD, may be
changed using the Portable Gas Detection (PGD) Application Software.

6.6. Checking Gas Exposures
After a successful self-test, the detector automatically goes into the Gas Monitoring Mode, in which
the user can view the Peak High, Peak Low, STEL and TWA values.
6.7. Configuring the Monitor Parameters
This section describes the various monitor parameters that are configurable.
The various parameters are shown in Figure 6-3: Monitor Configurable Menu and detailed in Table
6-5: Monitor Configuration Parameters. These parameters allow you to program the individual
monitor to meet your needs.

NOTE: The customer can also choose to clear the peak value by
pressing the left button. The device displays “CLEAR PEAK?”, press
the left button to confirm the operation.

Press both left hand and right hand button simultaneously and immediately release the buttons to
display the menu function (Figure 6-2: Menu Display).
