BASIC OPERATION
Battery Safety
Batteries can be very dangerous. Please observe common safety guidelines when testing batteries.
AA Series Technical Limitations
AA360 and AA1000 testers are designed to test nearly any lead acid battery with a nominal voltage of 6 or 12V.
Exposing the tester to voltages of more than 20V may permanently damage the tester and such damage is not covered
under the Argus warranty.

Basic Tester Operation
1. Connect test clamps to battery.
2. Select Voltage: Use [>] or [<] to select Voltage, press [enter/print].
3. Select Test Standard: Use [>] or [<] to select test standard, press [enter/print].
4. Enter Battery Rating: Use [>] or [<] to select rated value of battery, press [enter/print].
5. Follow (Start) and (enter) icons to complete testing.
6. Press [enter/print] to view results screens. Press [>] or [<] to view detailed results within a test screen.
7. Press and hold [enter/print] to print/save results (printer module must be connected).

Basic Tester Setup
Follow these steps to set the date / time and other tester preferences.
The tester must be connected to a battery during setup.
If you make a mistake, disconnect, re-connect and enter SETUP mode again.
The printer does not need to be connected to the tester to complete any setup operation.
Enter SETUP mode

After completing a test, press [enter/print] to change the display to the ‘SoC’ page. From the ‘SoC’ page, press and hold
[<] for 3 seconds (until beep). The display clears and the first setup page, ‘Prn’ is displayed. At each setup page,
change the value using [>] or [<], and confirm the value by pressing [enter/print]. After the last setup screen (P-S), all
setup values are stored and the tester returns to normal mode.
Each screen is identified at the top left of the display in order:
1. ‘Prn’ Set Printer language, see table below.
2. ‘Yr’ Set Year.
3. ‘Dat’. Date - set day first, then month.
4. ‘ti’. Time - set hours first, then minutes.
5. ‘Ey’. Easy test mode - select ‘On’ or ‘Off’
6. ‘P-F’. Pass / Fail mode – ‘On’ or ‘Off’.
7. ‘P-S’. Output mode - P=Print, S=Save. Select ‘P’ or ‘P-S’ or ‘S’.
Note: To skip any setup page without making any changes, press [enter/print] to advance to the next page.

Printer Language Selection
The AATPR20 can print in 22 languages. The default language is ENGLISH. On the ‘Prn’ page of the setup mode,
select the number for desired language.

Test Report Headline Text
The AA360 and AA1000 series testers allow the user to program up to three lines of custom text to be printed at the top
of the test report. Use the Argus Data Manager Software to set the test report headline text for your tester.

TESTER SETUP OPTIONS
There are a number of settings that may be modified to optimize functions for specific users and applications. These
settings are stored in memory and used in all future tests until the settings are again modified.
The tester must be connected to a battery during setup.
If you make a mistake, disconnect, re-connect and enter the SETUP mode again.
The printer does not need to be connected to the tester to complete any setup operation.
Enter SETUP mode
After completing a test, press [enter/print] button to change the display to the ‘SoC’ page. From the ‘SoC’ page, press
and hold [<] for 3 seconds (until beep). The display clears and the first setup page, ‘Prn’ is displayed. At each setup
page, change the value using [>] or [<], and confirm the value by pressing [enter/print]. After the last setup screen (P-
S), all setup values are stored and the tester returns to normal mode.
Each screen is identified at the top left of the display in order. Details for each SETUP page are below.

button.

SETUP Page 4: ‘ti’ Set the current time.
Use [<] and [>] to select the number for the present hour of the day. Confirm the selection by pressing [enter/print].
Use [<] and [>] to then select the minutes. Confirm the selection by pressing [enter/print].
SETUP Page 5: ‘Ey’ Easy Test mode. Select ‘On or ‘Off’ (default.)
Easy Test mode is designed to reduce the number of entries that must be made prior to each battery test. When Easy
Test mode is turned ‘On’, the tester will NOT prompt the user to select ‘voltage’ or ‘rating standard’ prior to each test.
The tester will use the ‘voltage’ and ‘rating standard’ values selected for the PREVIOUS test. This mode is particularly
useful if the tester is being used to repeatedly test batteries of the same voltage and rating standard.
Before setting Easy Test mode to ‘On’, be sure to perform a battery test using the selections for voltage and rating
system that you wish to choose automatically for subsequent tests. Use [<] and [>] to select ‘Easy Test’ mode ‘on’ or
‘off’. Confirm the selection by pressing [enter/print].
SETUP Page 6: ‘P-F’ Pass / Fail mode. Select ‘On’ or ‘Off’ (default.)
Pass/Fail mode is designed to provide ‘Pass’ or ‘Fail’ only test results whenever a reliable Battery Life / State of Health
test result is determined. When ‘Pass / Fail’ mode is turned ‘Off’, there is a range of Battery Life / State of Health
results that are interpreted as ‘Warning’ and trigger a recommendation of ‘Replace Soon’. This recommendation
indicates that the battery has not yet reached end of life, but replacement should be considered soon. When ‘Pass / Fail’
mode is turned ‘On’, all results in the ‘Warning’ range are reported as ‘Pass’.
Pass / Fail mode may be useful when the tester is primarily used to determine the performance of batteries for warranty

purposes.
Use [<] and [>] to select ‘Pass / Fail’ mode ‘on’ or ‘off’. Confirm the selection by pressing [enter/print].
SETUP Page 7: ‘P-S’ Output mode. Select P=Print, S=Save, or ‘P-S’=Print
and Save (default.)
To send the results to the printer only select ‘P’. To save results in memory only select ‘S’. To save results in memory
AND print select ‘P-S’.
When ‘P-S’ is selected, the printed report will include a form where the user can write information related to the test for
later reference. Saved test reports can be analyzed and stored on a computer using the Argus Data Manager software.
Use [<] and [>] to select the desired Output mode. Confirm the selection by pressing [enter/print].

PERFORMING A BATTERY TEST
Step 1: Connection
Connect the analyzer clamps to the battery terminals. Connect the red clamp to (+) terminal and the black clamp to (-)
terminal. Maximize surface contact between clamp and terminal by rocking the clamp on the terminal to allow the
clamp teeth to dig in.
Always connect the clamps directly to the lead of the battery terminals. Connection to a remote post or to vehicle
ground will affect the test results. Both jaws of each clamp must make contact with the lead of the battery
terminal.
Turn off connected loads or chargers before starting a battery test. Loads or chargers will not effect capacity
testing, but will influence the measurement of state of charge and the results of the Cranking Performance Test.
When a battery connection is made, the analyzer will beep and the screen becomes active if the battery voltage is above
4.7V. If the battery voltage is below approximately 4.7V the battery must be charged before testing can continue.
To reset the analyzer for another test, disconnect one clamp from the terminal and reconnect.
Step 2: Set Test Parameters
At the beginning of each test, choose test voltage, rating standard, and rated value of the battery. The tester algorithms
use these values to determine Battery Life results and recommendations.
Set Test Voltage

After connecting the tester to the battery, the voltage parameter will be flashing. Use the [>] and [<] buttons to select
the correct value (6V or 12V), and press [enter/print] to confirm the selection.
Set Rating Standard
The Argus tester can be used to test ANY 6V or 12V battery, including, WET, MF, GEL, VRLA, AGM, SPIRAL,
NiCad, Li. Select from specific pre-programmed rating standards for all WET, MF, and GEL automotive starting
batteries. For all other batteries and other battery rating systems, select the Ωrating standard.
After choosing the test voltage, the rating standard parameter will be flashing. Use the [>] or [<] buttons to select the
appropriate standard (CA, CCA, EN, EN2, DIN, Ω). Press [enter/print] to confirm the selection .
A battery’s rating standard is printed on the battery, for example ‘530 CCA’ or ‘EN300A’. Refer to the table below
help you select the most appropriate standard.
