with the following safety precautions. These precautions apply to both
operating and maintenance personnel and must be followed during all
phases of operation, service, and repair of this probe.
A WARNING statement calls attention to an operating procedure,
practice, or condition, which, if not followed correctly, could result in
injury or death to personnel.
A CAUTION statement calls attention to an operating procedure,
practice, or condition, which, if not followed correctly, could result in
damage to or destruction of parts or the entire product.
Do Not Work Alone
Do not work alone when working with high voltages.
Inspect the Probe
Inspect the probe and accessories for cracks and frayed or broken
leads before each use. If defects or damages are noted, DO NOT USE
the probe.
Dry Conditions
Hands, shoes, oor and work bench must be dry. Avoid making
measurements under humidity, dampness or other environmental
conditions that might affect safety.
Do Not Remove the Probe Casing
Removal of the probe’s casing may expose you to electric shock.
If necessary, disconnect the inputs and outputs of the probe before
opening the case.
Hazardous Contact
To avoid injury, remove jewelry such as rings, watches, and other
metallic objects. Do not touch exposed connections and components
when power is present.
Unexpected Charges
Hazardous voltages may be present in unexpected locations in circuitry
being tested when a fault condition in the circuit exists. Capacitors

inside the instrument may retain a charge even if the instrument is
disconnected from its source of supply.
Not for Critical Applications
This probe is not authorized for use in contact with the human body or
for use as a component in a life-support device or system.
Do Not Substitute Parts
Do not install substitute parts or perform any unauthorized modication
to the instrument.
Only Qualied Personnel
Only qualied personnel should use this probe. This differential
voltage probe is designed to be used by personnel who are trained,
experienced, or otherwise qualied to recognize hazardous situations
and who are trained in the safety precautions necessary to avoid
possible injury when using such a device.
Observe Maximum Working Voltage
Do not apply to the input any potential that exceeds the maximum
voltage rating of the probe. See Electrical Specications, page 8.
Use Proper Power Source
Do not operate this probe from a power source that applies more than
the voltage specied.
Must be Grounded
Always properly ground the probe with the probe’s ground lead alligator
clip before contacting high voltage circuits with the probe tip. Always
disconnect the probe tip from high voltage circuits before disconnecting
the ground lead. Do not connect the probe ground lead to any point
which is at a potential other than earth ground. Use only on test
equipment where the chassis or return lead is properly grounded.
CAT I Usage Only
This probe is intended for use in measurement Category I (CAT I). Dot
not use for measurements on mains circuits. This probe is not intended
for usage within Measurement Categories II, III, & IV.
Finger Guard
Keep ngers behind the probe’s nger guard during use.

Connecting and Disconnecting from High Voltage
Turn the high voltage source off before connecting or disconnecting the
probe whenever possible.
Keep the Probe Clean
The probe body should be kept clean and free of any conductive
contamination.
Use Only in Of ce-Type Indoor Setting
The probe is designed to be used in of ce-type indoor environments of
Pollution Degree 2. Do not operate the probe:
zIn the presence of noxious, corrosive, or flammable fumes,
gases, vapors, chemicals, or finely-divided particulates.
zIn environments where there is a danger of any liquid being
spilled on the probe.
zIn air temperatures exceeding the specified operating
temperatures.
zIn atmospheric pressures outside the specified altitude limits
or where the surrounding gas is not air.
Measurements May Be Compromised
Measurements made by this probe may be outside speci cations if the
probe is used in non-of ce-type environments. Such environments may
include rapid temperature or humidity changes, sunlight, vibration and/
or mechanical shocks, acoustic noise, electrical noise, strong electric
elds, or strong magnetic elds.

IEC Category Rating
The IEC 61010 standard denes safety category ratings that specify the
amount of electrical energy available and the voltage impulses that may occur
on electrical conductors associated with these category ratings. The category
rating is a Roman numeral of I, II, III, or IV. This rating is also accompanied
by a maximum voltage of the circuit to be tested, which denes the voltage
impulses expected and required insulation clearances. These categories are:
Category I
(CAT I)
Measurement instruments whose measurement inputs
are not intended to be connected to the mains supply. The
voltages in the environment are typically derived from a
limited-energy transformer or a battery.
Category II
(CAT II)
Measurement instruments whose measurement inputs are
meant to be connected to the mains supply at a standard
wall outlet or similar sources. Example measurement
environments are portable tools and household appliances.
Category III
(CAT III)
Measurement instruments whose measurement inputs are
meant to be connected to the mains installation of a building.
Examples are measurements inside a building’s circuit
breaker panel or the wiring of permanently-installed motors.
Category IV
(CAT IV)
Measurement instruments whose measurement inputs are
meant to be connected to the primary power entering a
building or other outdoor wiring.

2 Using the Probe
1. Connect the red banana plug to the volts terminal and the
black banana plug to the COM terminal of your multimeter.
WARNING
Connect the CT2700’s common lead (alligator clip) to earth ground or
reliable chassis ground before use. This ground connection is critical to
the safe operation of the probe. This connection must always be made
BEFORE the probe tip comes into contact with the high voltage and
must not be removed until after the probe tip has been removed from
the high voltage source.

2. Select the voltage range. Do not use autoranging.
3. Whenever possible, turn the high voltage source off before
making any connections.
4. Before turning on the high voltage source, be certain the
operator is not touching the device under test.
5. Turn on the high voltage source.
6. You can now analyze the voltage on your multimeter.
7. Turn off the high voltage source.
8. Disconnect the probe from the high voltage source BEFORE
disconnecting the ground clip lead.

Clean only the exterior probe body and cables. Use a soft cotton cloth
lightly moistened with a mild solution of detergent and water.
WARNING
Do not allow any portion of the probe to be submerged at any time.
WARNING
Dry the probe thoroughly before attempting to make voltage
measurements.
CAUTION
Do not subject the probe to solvents or solvent fumes as these can
cause deterioration of the probe body and cables.
