User Guide

1Introduction

In order to keep the VPi-series running the day-to-day maintenance, is be covered by you, a trained

operator. Only in case of malfunction or in case of scheduled service-maintenance, the local service

organization is involved.

The actions below are considered to be normal maintenance actions which can be executed by every

trained operator. Additional information can be found in the user guide which is available on:

http://downloads.oce.com.

1. Replace the ink-containers

2. Replace the waste containers (ink and water)

3. Add water to the PIM-conditioning

4. Replace the flip rings from the High Capacity Stacker

5. Replace the tissue cassettes

6. Replace the tissue ribbons

7. Clean the Z-sensors

8. Clean the SZ-sensors

9. Clean the print belt

10. Clean the inner side of the print belt.

When applicable the items above are not described in detail, but a reference is made to the user

guide which contains this information.

In order to increase the uptime of the system, it is possible to give an additional training, which

enables you to conduct a number of maintenance actions which are normally executed by the

service engineer. In addition you can do some checks and execute ‘normal’ maintenance actions

preventive which might prevent future problems and/or increase the uptime.

This document describes the so called ‘advanced Key Operator Maintenance’. It can be used by you

as reference and logbook.

In order to perform the Level 1 Uptime Optimization actions, you need to have some additional

tools:

•A flashlight

•Torx screwdriver T20

•Screwdriver #2

•Vacuum cleaner

It is up to the local organization to arrange these. Also the normal maintenance tools and supplies

are needed:

•PML

•Alpha wipes TX1004

•Nitrile gloves

•Print belt cleaning cloth

In this document, a couple of times we ask you to ‘inform service’ in case you notice

something during a check. Note that you supposed to inform the service engineer via

the logbook at the rear of this document.

Only submit a service call in case the system is not working according expectation/specification.

In the procedures there are differences, depending on the ‘revision’ of the system.

In case you encounter problems during performing maintenance actions, please add

this in the ‘remark’ section at the rear of this guide. An engineer will have a look at it

3Daily Maintenance

3.1 Check the environment.

3.1.1 Check the print room conditions

Check the temperature and humidity of the environment of the system.

3.1.2 Check the media storage conditions.

Make sure the media is stored wrapped in packing material or boxes and protected from

mechanical damage.

4Weekly Maintenance.

4.1 Check the ink handling.

4.1.1 Check the ink buffer reservoirs

Rev 1 –open the top cover of the ink

handling and check for leakage

Rev 2,3,4 –no action

In case you find leakage, inform local service.

4.1.2 Check the ink supply cans.

Rev 1 –open the supply tray of the ink handling and check for leakage

Rev 2,3,4 –open de doors of the ink handling and check for leakage

In case you find leakage, inform local service.

4.2 Check the maintenance

4.2.1 Check the manifolds

Rev 1 - Open the maintenance door at the rear of the system. Use a

flashlight to check if you see air in the ink hoses or in the top of the

reservoir from the manifold.

In case you find air, inform local service.

Rev 2,3,4 - Open the maintenance door at the rear of the

system. Use a flashlight to check if you see air in the ink hoses.

In case you find air, inform local service.

4.2.2 Check the Back Pressure Reservoirs

Rev 1,2,3,4 - Open the maintenance door at the

rear of the system. Use a flashlight to check the

4/5 Back Pressure Reservoirs for cracks and or leakage.

In case you find cracks or ink leakage, stop printing and

submit a service call.

Before you start, switch

of the system with the

‘moon button’ on the

operator panel.

4.2.3 Check the degassing tray.

Rev 1,2,3,4 –Open the maintenance door at the rear

of the system. Pull the degassing tray towards you

and use a flashlight to check the degas tray for

leakage.

In case you find ink leakage, stop printing and submit

a service call.

4.3 Check the print unit

4.3.1 Check the print-belt for contamination

Rev 1,2,3,4 –Open the lower and middle front doors from the print unit. Use a

flashlight to check if the print belt is contaminated with ink.

In case you find contamination, clean the print belt with PML and a dust free cloth

(TX1004 Alphawipe).

This action is considered to be normal maintenance actions which can be executed by every

4.3.2 Check the print-belt damage

Rev 1,2,3,4 - Use a flashlight to check if the print belt is damaged or has a crack.

Open the left hand flap (1) and rotate the print belt manually. Check at the location of

the roller, on the very right hand side.

In case you find damage. Stop printing

immediately as it can cause major

damage to the system. Inform the local

service organization.

4.3.3 Clean the inner-side of the print-belt

Rev 1,2,3,4 –Start the maintenance action for cleaning the bottom-side of the print belt.

Before you start, switch

of the system with the

4.4 Clean the Registration units.

4.4.1 Clean the Z-registration sensors.

Rev 1,2,3,4 –Clean the Z-registration units in the Paper path module, Registration input

module Unit (2x) and Registration output module.

This action is considered to be normal maintenance actions which can be executed by every

4.4.2 Clean the SZ-rollers.

Rev 1,2,3,4 –Check if the SZ-rollers in the Paper path module, Registration input module

Unit, Print Module, Registration output module and stacker are contaminated.

When required, use PML and a dust-free cloth to clean the rollers.

This action is considered to be normal maintenance actions which can be executed

4.4.3 Clean the segment-rollers.

Rev 1,2,3,4 –Open the lower and middle front doors from the print unit, turn the green

knob 1. Turn and lift the green knob 2

Check if the segment-rollers are

contaminated. When required, use PML

and a dust-free cloth to clean the

segments.

Be cautious not break the segments from the

wheels. When a segment is broken, inform the

local service organization.

Before you start, switch

of the system with the

‘moon button’ on the

operator panel.
