SCSI Backplane Option

This document describes the optional small computer system interface (SCSI) back-

plane for the Dell PowerEdge 6300 and 4x00 systems.

The 1 x 8 SCSI backplane provides hot-pluggable Ultra2/LVD SCSI connections for up

to eight 1-inch hard-disk drives in the system’s internal drive compartment. Except for

the added SCSI connections provided on the board, the 1 x 8 backplane is identical to

the 1 x 6 backplane in features and functionality (for example, the cable connectors on

both backplanes are identical). For a description of the SCSI backplane, refer to your

system User’s Guide and Installation and Troubleshooting Guide.

NOTE: Before you install the 1 x 8 backplane, verify that your system chassis supports

it. Check the back of your system for a label (located between the connectors and the

first power supply) that specifies that your chassis supports the 1 x 8 backplane. If you

do not find a label, you may not be able to use the 1 x 8 backplane in your system

chassis. Contact your Dell representative for further information and instructions.

Installing a SCSI Backplane

WARNING: The power supplies in this computer system produce high volt-

ages and energy hazards, which can cause bodily harm. Only trained

service technicians are authorized to remove the computer cover and

access any of the components inside the computer.

NOTE: You can use only 1-inch hard-disk drives with the 1 x 8 backplane. You

cannot use 1.6-inch hard-disk drives with the 1 x 8 backplane. To work with the

1 x 8 backplane, you need to convert the drive carriers to the 1-inch width by removing

the spacer insert that fastens to each carrier adjacent to the carrier release handle.

To replace a SCSI backplane board with a different backplane board, perform the fol-

lowing steps.

NOTICE: See "Protecting Against Electrostatic Discharge" in the Installation

and Troubleshooting Guide.

1. Unpack the SCSI backplane board.

Refer to the documentation accompanying the host adapter card.

WARNING: Before you continue with this procedure, you must turn off the

computer and disconnect it from its AC power source. For more information,

see "Safety First—For You and Your Computer" in the Installation and

Troubleshooting Guide.

2. Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals, and disconnect the sys-

tem AC power cable from its power source.

3. Remove the computer cover.

NOTICE: You must remove all hard-disk drives to avoid damaging the SCSI

backplane board when you remove it later in this procedure.

4. Remove the hard-disk drives from the system.

5. Slide the system board tray to its service position (see Figure 1-1).

6. Disconnect the Ultra160/m SCSI cable from the SCSI backplane board.

To avoid damage to the cable, use the strain-relief loop to disconnect the cable.

7. Disconnect the flat data cable from the locking connector on the backplane

board.

8. Disconnect the power cable labeled "HD-B/P" from the power connector on the

backplane board.

To release the connector, press the latch on the side of the connector.

9. Disconnect the fan power cable from the power connector labeled "FAN" on the

backplane board.

To release the connector, press the latch on the side of the connector.

10. Loosen the captive thumbscrew on the backplane board.

11. Slide the SCSI backplane board away from the chassis inner wall approximately

1 cm (1/4 inch), and then lift the board off of the L-shaped mounting tabs and

away from the chassis (see Figure 1-1).

12. Install the new backplane board:

a. While holding the backplane board by its edges, position the board so that

the tabs on the computer chassis wall fit through the corresponding slots in

the backplane board.

b. Slide the backplane board toward the power-supply paralleling board (PSPB).

c. Secure the backplane board by tightening the captive screw.

13. Connect the 20-pin data cable leading from the system board to the connector

labeled "PLANAR" on the backplane board (see Figure 1-2).

14. Connect the power cable labeled "HD-B/P" to the connector labeled "POWER" on

the backplane board.

15. Connect the Ultra160/m SCSI cable leading from the connector labeled "SCSI2"

on the system board to the connector labeled "SCSIA" on the backplane board.

16. Slide the system board tray back into the system chassis.

17. Does the new SCSI backplane board have a different number of drive bays?

Ye s . You must change the orientation of the two drive bay keys to match the new

backplane. Go to step 18.

No. Go to step 25.

18. Remove the front bezel.

19. Turn the key in the keylock to lock the drive locking flange (see Figure 1-3).

With the flange in the locked position, you have easier access to the upper drive

bay key screws.

20. To remove the upper drive bay key, remove the three screws.

21. To remove the lower drive bay key, remove the three screws securing the key to

the chassis.

22. Turn the key in the keylock to unlock the drive locking flange.

The drive alignment key cannot be removed when the drive locking flange is in

the locked position.

23. Rotate each drive bay key so that the "6" or "8" stamped on the end of each key

faces forward and matches the drive capacity of the new backplane (see

Figure 1-4).

24. Reinstall the lower drive bay key using the three screws.

25. To reinstall the upper drive bay key, lock the drive locking flange and reinstall the

three screws through the flange cutouts.

26. Replace the front bezel.

27. Replace the computer cover.

28. Reinstall the hard-disk drives in the computer.

NOTE: You can use only 1-inch hard-disk drives with an eight-bay backplane—you

cannot use 1.6-inch hard-disk drives. (A six-bay backplane can accommodate

1.6-inch or 1-inch drives.) If you install a 1 x 8 backplane, you need to convert the

drive carriers to the 1-inch width by removing the spacer insert that fastens to

each carrier adjacent to the carrier release handle.

29. Reconnect the computer to its AC power source.
