WIRELESS ETHERNET CONNECTIVITY WITH VIA!dj
ELAN’s new VIA!dj
has greatly expanded customers’ access to their music within
their own home. A homeowner’s complete CD collection can be stored, then accessed
throughout the house. In order to enhance the ELAN digital music experience, VIA!dj
is
compatible with most home networks and broadband internet services. Ethernet connectivity
provides very quick data transfer between the homeowner’s computer, the internet, and the
VIA!dj in order to access CD information, cover art, and digital music. The preferred method
of interfacing VIA!dj
to a network is through a physical Ethernet hard-wired connection. In
instances where a wired network is possible, ELAN strongly recommends using that option.
In instances where a wired network is impossible (retrofit installations in older homes, for
example,) a wireless network may be utilized.
This Tech Bulletin assumes that a working network already exists and that the
computer can access the Internet. Specific instructions for installing hubs, routers, wireless
bridges, etc., can be obtained from the manuals provided with the products. If having
difficulty establishing network connectivity, please contact the specific vendors of the
networking products being used. Once the network is up and running (able to connect to the
internet,) call ELAN Tech Support if you experience difficulty connecting to VIA!dj
from
XIVA
Producer (control software for VIA!dj
.)
Testing has been done using a Linksys WET11 wireless Ethernet bridge connected to
VIA!dj
and a wireless router (Netgear MR814 and Linksys BEFW11s4 were both used
successfully.) The following procedure should be used as a generic guide to setting up
VIA!dj
to a functioning home network.
1. Install router with cable modem or DSL if not already present. Verify Internet access
and other networking functions.
2. Power router down. Physically connect Linksys WET11 wireless Ethernet bridge to
PC using Ethernet cable.
3. Run WET11 configuration utility CD that came with the unit. Setup Wizard will look for
WET11 and verify connection.
4. When Setup appears, select correct bridge from list (if more than one is found.)
5. Password page will appear. Default password is “admin”
6. Mode Settings:
• If system has any hardwired networked computers, select “INFRASTRUCTURE”
• If system is using only wireless network connections, select “AD-HOC”

7. Basic Settings
• Wireless SSID must be set to same SSID as router. Reference router setup for
SSID name.
• “CHANNEL” setting is auto assigned once the units connect, so no other entry is
necessary.
• BRIDGE NAME is whatever you want to assign to WET11.
8. IP Settings
• Both static and dynamic IP addresses will work with VIA!dj
. Static IP addresses
have been shown to be more reliable, especially in situations where power is
removed from the network but not from VIA!dj
. When the router powers up after
a power loss, it will reassign IP addresses to the wireless bridge or VIA!dj
that
may not coincide with the settings prior to power loss. If the new IP addresses are
not correct, the system will not function.
• To avoid this problem, ELAN recommends the VIA!dj
be assigned a static IP
address. In router setup menus, locate “starting IP address” information. Linksys
is usually 192.168.0.100 and Netgear is usually 192.168.0.1. If you set the IP
address in the bridge to a number lower than the starting IP address, there will be
no IP conflicts. (Ex: set IP address in WET11 to 192.168.0.99 for Linksys. For
Netgear, change the starting IP address from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.100 and
set the WET11 to 192.168.0.99.
9. Security Settings
• WEP encryption is recommended for security reasons. Use the same settings here
as in the router.
10. Save Settings and Exit
• Power WET11 down. Power router up.
• Open browser window and type address for router (Linksys 192.168.1.1, Netgear
192.168.0.1.) Verify that the router and network are functioning correctly.
• Connect WET11 to VIA!dj
with Ethernet cable and place the wireless bridge in a
high location free from clutter. Power up VIA!dj
and WET11.
• Check VIA!dj
settings to verify that an IP address has been populated and that it
is the address you assigned in WET11.
• “Ping” the IP address to test communication link. Open a DOS window
(Start>Run>Type” ping 192.168.x.x” (x is IP address.) Click “OK” A DOS window
will open and you should get a response on your computer. If pinging fails, move
WET11 closer to the router/WAP. Type “Exit” to close DOS window.
• Test using XIVA
Producer software. The IP address should be in the selection
window.
These are generic guidelines. Specifics may change somewhat due to the
many configurations that exist, but most applications will be similar to what is
presented here. Settings and information critical to configuring your network can be
found in the manuals that come with the networking equipment. If you experience
problems establishing your wireless network, please consult the manufacturers of the
wireless equipment or consult a networking professional. Please consult the VIA!dj
Installation Manual for specific installation instructions.
