Cluster Configuration Guide
29 January 2001
(see Versions at the end of this document)
Introduction
This document defines the supported HP NetServer LT 6000r configurations with HP Rack Storage/12FC
and Microsoft Cluster Server. These configurations minimize single points of failure (SPOF, SPOFless1)
and provide extended availability. The specific configuration certified and supported by both Hewlett-
Packard and Microsoft is defined, as are other guidelines to assist you in configuring your clustered
NetServers. This guide is prescriptive; it describes the configurations supported by HP. Any deviance to
these configurations can result in an inoperative cluster or an operating cluster with degraded performance,
hidden SPOFs, etc., and therefore will not be supported by HP.
What's Defined in Racked Cluster
Cluster
SPUs
Local and Shared Storage
Intra-cluster and Client LANs
Shared Storage Cabling
Cluster
Type of SPUs HP NetServer LT 6000r
Each node must be the same model SPU, but may have different sizes of
main memory and cache, and different CPU clock speeds.

Shared Storage HP Rack Storage/12FC with 2 FCArray Cards, HP disks, and using an HP
D8602A or D8602B HBA in each server. See Shared Storage below.
LANs:
1For more information about configuring a SPOFless cluster, refer to the HP white paper, High Availability
MSCS Cluster Solutionon the HP NetServers, HA Planning website.

Client LAN Any NIC that is HP and Microsoft approved. See Client LAN below.
For a SPOFless cluster, two D5013B NICs configured with AFT is
recommended.
Intra-cluster
(Heartbeat) LAN Embedded NIC with crossover cable, or, configure as a VLAN through an
Ethernet switch. SeeIntra-cluster LAN below.
Power source Direct from power mains, power conditioner or uninterruptible power
supply (UPS) using any power conditioner or UPS. Redundant power
distribution units (PDU’s) are strongly recommended.

Local
Controller May use embedded SCSI, embedded DAC, NetRAID-3Si or NetRAID-1Si.
For SPOFless, recommend embedded DAC with drives in RAID-1 mirror,
or another fault tolerant RAID level.
Driver For embedded SCSI, use sym_hi.sys from Windows 2000 Adv. Server CD
or later.
For embedded DAC or NetRAID-xSi, use mraid35x.sys version 2.62

location) SPU internal drive bays or HP external drive cabinet (e.g., HP Rack
Storage/12), any number.
Disk drives Must be HP (hot swap or fixed)
SCSI bus Any HP cables that meet SCSI specifications and any SCSI bus speed.
SCSI Ids Any

D8602B - Afcw2k.sys 3.0.3245.1
RAID level 0,1, 3, 5, 10
For SPOFless configurations a fault tolerant RAID type, e.g. RAID 5, is
recommended for all shared storage.
