Introduction

This document defines the supported HP NetServer LXr 8000 configurations with HP Rack Storage/12s

and /8s and Microsoft Cluster Server. These configurations minimize single points of failure (SPOF),

provide maximum availability, and have been certified by Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft. This guide is

prescriptive; it describes the configurations supported by HP. Any deviance to these configurations can

result in an inoperative cluster or an operating cluster with degraded performance, hidden SPOFs, etc.,

and therefore will not be supported by HP.

Cluster

Type of SPUs HP NetServer LXr 8000

Each node must be the same model SPU, but may have different clocks

speeds, main memory sizes, cache sizes, and number of CPUs (2, 3, or 4).

Shared Storage HP Rack Storage/12 or Rack Storage/8 with HP NetRAID-3Si controller

and HP disks. See Shared Storage below.

LANs:

Client LAN Any NIC that is HP and Microsoft approved. See Client LAN below.

Intra-cluster

(Heartbeat) LAN HP D5013A with crossover cable. See Intra-cluster LAN below.

Power source Direct from power mains, power conditioner or uninterruptible power

supply (UPS) using any power conditioner or UPS.

System software:

Navigator version L.15.05 or later (400/450 MHz with Rack Storage/12 Model D5989A)

L.16.00 or later (400/450 MHz with Rack Storage/12 Model D5989B)

L.16.00 or later (500/550 MHz)

RAID arrays A RAID array (logical disk) must be composed of all the same disk model

(i.e., part number and suffix). Different size or speed disks are not

allowed in the same RAID array. Any combination of disk models is

allowed on a SCSI channel. Any combination of disk models is allowed

in a cluster. RAID arrays may not span NetRAID Adapters.

Shared Storage Cabling

This part of the guide defines the allowable cabling configurations for clusters using the HP NetServer

LXr 8000 and HP Rack Storage/12s and Rack Storage/8s. Only these cabling configurations and cables

are supported.

Version History

30 March 2000 Corrected references to software versions “or later”.

16 November 1999 Added a 400/450 MHz cluster configuration that uses the Rack Storage/12

Model D5989B and revised cabling drawings for clarity.

28 September 1999 Added 500 and 550 MHz CPUs. Note that the BIOS version, Navigator

version, and Rack Storage/12 and its controller's model numbers vary with

the CPU speed (400/450 versus 500/550 MHz). Added 36.4GB hard drive

for use in the Rack Storage/12. Clarified wording for the use of Local

Storage Controllers.

25 May 1999 Added two 18.2 GB disk drives for use with the Rack Storage/12. These

are the D7031A HH 10K rpm disk drive and the D7174A low profile 7200

rpm drive.

21 April 1999 CPU speeds limited to 400 and 450 MHz only. In Shared Storage

corrected "NetRAID Assistant" version: was W.01.20, is A.01.15.

Removed "no hot spare" from the Configuration settings for the Shared

Storage Controller.
