Processor Option Installation Instructions

for HP ProLiant DL785 Servers

Overview

This document provides the procedure for installing a processor and heatsink.

Kit contents

Processor memory cell assembly (four)

Processor with installation tool (four)

Heatsink (four)

DIMM filler (12)

This document

SW1 instructions for quad-core 3.1 GHz or greater and six-

core processors

CAUTION: All supported AMD Opteron quad-core processors 3.1 GHz or greater and all

supported AMD Opteron six-core processors require the system maintenance switch,

located on the I/O backplane, (SW1) position 5 to be in the On position.

CAUTION: HP recommends updating to the latest version of firmware. Earlier firmware

versions might not validate the required switch setting for these processors.

NOTE: Six-core AMD Opteron Processors might show a 1 MB reduction in available L3

cache when performance enhancing HT Assist is enabled because HT Assist requires 1MB

of L3 cache per CPU to operate.

Installing a processor

The server supports a four- or eight-processor configuration.

CAUTION: The cell filler is required in cells 3 - 6 in a four-processor configuration.

CAUTION: To prevent damage to electrical components, properly ground the server before

beginning any installation procedure. Improper grounding can cause electrostatic

discharge.

CAUTION: To avoid damage to the processor and system board, only authorized

personnel should attempt to replace or install the processor in this server.

CAUTION: To prevent possible server malfunction and damage to the equipment,

multiprocessor configurations must contain processors with the same part number.

CAUTION: Always install the processors into the processor memory cell supplied in the kit.

Failure to do so might result in processor incompatibility.

CAUTION: To help avoid damage to the processor and system board, do not install the

processor without using the processor installation tool.

To install a processor:

1. Locate and download the latest ROM version from the HP website

(http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Nav?h_pagetype=s-

002&h_lang=en&h_cc=us&h_product=241435&h_client=S-A-R163-

1&h_page=hpcom&lang=en&cc=us). Follow the instruction on the website to update the

system ROM.

2. Power down the server.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury from hot surfaces, allow the internal

system components to cool before touching them.

CAUTION: When working with the cell filler or processor memory cell always place the

component on a flat, level, antistatic surface.

3. Remove the cell filler. For instructions on removing the cell filler, see the label on the access

panel or the server maintenance and service guide on the Documentation CD.

4. Remove the airflow baffle from the processor memory cell.

a. Press the two airflow baffle release tabs.

b. Pivot the airflow baffle up and remove the airflow baffle.

5. Open the heatsink retaining bracket.

CAUTION: The pins on the processor socket are very fragile. Any damage to them may

require replacing the processor memory cell.

6. Remove the processor socket protective cover. Retain the cover for future use.

CAUTION: Failure to completely open the processor locking lever prevents the processor

from seating during installation, leading to hardware damage.

7. Open the processor retaining latch and the processor socket retaining bracket.

IMPORTANT: Be sure the processor remains inside the processor installation tool.

8. If the processor has separated from the installation tool, carefully re-insert the processor in

the tool.

9. Align the processor installation tool with the socket and install the processor.

CAUTION: The processor is designed to fit one way into the socket. Use the alignment

guides on the processor and socket to properly align the processor with the socket.

10. Press down firmly until the processor installation tool clicks and separates from the

processor, then remove the processor installation tool.

11. Close the processor retaining latch and the processor socket retaining bracket.

12. Remove the heatsink cover.

CAUTION: After the cover is removed, do not touch the thermal interface media.

13. Install the heatsink.

14. Close the heatsink retaining bracket.

15. Install DIMMs and DIMM fillers.

16. Replace the processor memory airflow baffle.

17. Install the processor memory cell into the server.

18. Repeat steps 4 - 17 for all four processors.

19. Power up the server.

20. The installation is complete.
