Congratulations!
And thank you for purchasing the NCR WorldMark 4380 Server. This document will guide you
through the steps needed to set up your server for the first time.
Note: No boards should be removed from or added to the server until after operating system
installation is complete.
Refer to the Important Support Information section at the end of this document for information
about:
• Installation help.
• Verifying remote support functionality.
• Sources for updated software, diagnostics, and server information.

information. Refer to the WorldMark 4380 Deskside Product Guide for additional information
about troubleshooting, error and beep codes, and remote support. Refer to the Server Software

To unpack the system:
1. Remove the foam “packing ring” from around the server.
2. Remove the protective plastic from around the server.
3. Remove the shipping insert in the tape drive.
Make sure you have everything to complete the hardware installation:
• Either an external modem with AC power cable, serial port cable, and phone cable or a Server
Management Board with internal modem, serial port cable, and phone cable
• Monitor (customer provided), keyboard, mouse, and associated cables
• Antistatic wrist strap
• Documentation:
– WorldMark 4300 Installing Windows NT Server
– WorldMark 4300 Installing MP-RAS
– WorldMark 4380 Deskside Product Guide
– Server Software Guide (OctaSCALE)
– System Site Log
Remove the server off the pallet by the best means available (hoist or by hand). Place server in a
location that is in accordance with the specifications in the Site Preparation Guide.

IMPORTANT: Do not modify or use the supplied AC power cord if it is not the exact type
required. Replace it, if necessary. Make sure the supplied power cord is compatible with the AC
wall outlet type in the area where the server is to be installed.
The wall receptacle must be terminated in grounding-type male plug designed for use in the region,
and be labeled as certified by an agency acceptable in the region.
When you are sure that you have the correct power cord, plug it into the server AC power
connector.
Do not plug the power cord into the wall outlet yet.

IMPORTANT: Do not plug in the server before connecting peripherals.
You need to install:
• Keyboard
• Video monitor
• Mouse
You must install a monitor and keyboard to configure the system. You may remove the monitor
and keyboard after running the System Configuration Utility (SCU).
Connect external peripheral devices such as a printer by following instructions included with the
device.
Connect a parallel printer to parallel port LPT1. Connect a serial printer to serial port COM2.
The following figure shows the location of external connector for peripheral devices.

IMPORTANT: Do not plug in the server before connecting peripherals.
For the server containing a Server Management Board with an internal modem, follow the
procedures below to allow remote support functionality.
For the server containing an SMB with an internal modem:
• Run the external cable from “Comm In” to COM1 on the back of the chassis.
• Connect your telephone line into the “Line” connector on the SMB.

To install the modem:
1. Connect the enclosed computer interface cable from the 9-pin COM1 port on the server to the
25-pin connector on the modem.
2. Connect the modem power supply cable to the power supply connector.
3. Connect the telephone line cable from the analog modem connection in your facility to the
RJ11 connector on the modem.
4. Plug the modem power supply into the AC power outlet.
5. Place modem on top of the server. The power LED should be illuminated.

If a network adapter is installed, you need to plug your network cable into the appropriate network
connector.
The network connector is located in one of the 15 PCI or 4 EISA add-in board slots. The exact
location of the network connector depends upon the type of network card you order.

The system requires up to three AC power receptacles as follows:
Server 200-240 Vac
Modem Power Supply 110/220 Vac (if applicable)
Monitor 110/200 Vac
Plug the server, modem power supply (as applicable), and monitor power cords into a grounded
AC electrical outlet. It is recommended that you do not use an extension cord.
