Important Note : For all Radiation meters which are battery powered & exported, battery cells

are removed & shipped. This is because air line / customs will not accept electronic equipments

with battery cells inside Hence customers are requested to procure these battery cells locally &

power-up the unit. For battery cells replacement, refer to CHAPTER-V.

The range changeover happens automatically when doserate exceeds 90% of current

range or falls below 5% of current range.

3.3. DOSE RATE / COUNT RATE INTER PRETATION

Step -1 : Operating range selection

After power ON, the doserate/count rate ranges of operation are selected automatical

for the current unit of operation. If the dose rate exceeds 90% of a range then it switchs

to higher range. If it falls to less than 5% of current range then it would go to lower

range. In this way one of the 5 ranges in dose rate mode & 4 ranges in countsrate mode

are selected automatically.

If it exceeds full scale of the instrument O-Fl is shown on the instrument.

Step -2 : Dose rate / count rate inter pretation

For a given measurement range & unit the doserate / countrate canbe measured by

using 2 methods.

Method A : Using the 5 digit seven segment display shown on the bottom of the LCD

display along with the corresponding unit shown. This is direct readout value in selected

measurement unit. Multiplication factor should be ignored.

100

10 30

Method B - Using analog scale indication : The measured doserate/countrate is shown

as a analog indication using 51 independent bar scale LCD segments

Measured doserate = (Last major division which is lit) +

(no.of segments lit after major division) x 2

X multiplication factor

Please refer to following examples to understand the doserate interpretation

Ex : 1

In this case all the segments are lit upto major

division 40. Additionally 2 minor segments

following 40 are also lit.

The multiplication factor shown is X 0.02 mR/hr. Now the doserate

= [40 + 2 x 2] x 0.05mR/hr

= 2.2mR/hr

Ex : 2

In this case all the segments are lit upto major division 80. Additionally 3 minor segments

following 80 are also lit.

The Multiplication factor shown is X 0.5mSv/hr

Now the doserate= [80 + 3x2] x 0.5mSv/hr

= 4.30mSv/hr

3.4 To make quality measurements

The instrument uses sliding time constant window to measure background radiation or

radiation emitted from a source / sample. Power the unit ON & select measurement unit.

Keep the unit front face in proximity to radiation source if applicable. Allow display to

show readings. After a gap of 10 seconds, take readings every 5 seconds. Take average of

about 5-10 readings to know the average doserate / countrate.

BLOCK DIAGRAM DESCRIPTION

Gamma Radiography Survey Meter RM704 is a battery operated radiation survey meter which

works on 6V (4 x 1.5V) AA size battery). Internally the regulated power supplies of +5V and

+5V/6V are generated by two low dropout regulators for powering the pulse processing and

display section and the high voltage section. The high voltage section generates an EHT of +500V

@ 75mA for biasing the GM detector which is used as the radiation sensor.

Pulse processing section comprises of a micro-controller , BCD counter, a negative tail pulse to

TTL convertor, E2PROM, Reset circuit and buzzer driver ckt.

The display & user input interface section comprises of a custom LCD display & a 2x2 matrix

keypad for configuring and use of the instrument the custom LCD comprises of a full scale

indication of 0 - 100 on analog scale with a resolution of 2. A corresponding multiplication

factor along with the measurement unit is displayed below. When the segments of the analog

indication are lit, then that corresponds to the value of the current measurement multiplied by

the multiplication factor shown below as X #.## where #.## is the multiplication factor.

Direct digital readout is given below in the bottom by 5 independent 7 segment displays along

with decimal point. The measurement unit is same as that of the analog LCDindication. Howerver

multiplication factor is not applicable.
