About Preventative Maintenance
Purpose
The preventative maintenance procedure is intended to provide the best possible
operating results from the Spectra 10K library.
Time Involved
This procedure takes approximately two hours.
Tools Needed
◗A credit card or thin piece of plastic
◗A #1 Phillips screwdriver with a long handle (8-inch minimum)
◗A large flat head screwdriver
◗A can of compressed air
◗A vacuum cleaner with static-free attachment (hard plastic nozzle)
◗A new Spectra 10K library air filter
◗A Sony cleaning tape
◗Four bar-coded scratch tapes

Preparing the Library
1. Use your backup software to remove all tapes from the library, noting which tapes
were in which slots.
2. Shut off all power to the library.
3. Shut down the host system and switch off the power.
4. Remove the library’s AC power cord from the AC power outlet.
5. Carefully remove SCSI cable connections from the back of the library.
6. Move the library to a clean work space with plenty of room, so that you have access
to all sides of the library.

Changing the Air Filter
1. The front panel of the library has a grill on the left, and on the left end of the grill
is a groove. Use a credit card or other piece of plastic to open the grill.
2. Swing open the grill.
3. Remove the air filter.
4. Inspect the grill; if the grill is dirty, clean it.
5. Install the new air filter.
6. Close the grill and snap it shut.
Note: Filters should be checked on a monthly basis or after the library has
been moved. On average, the library filter needs changing once
every three months. If the environment is particularly dirty, the
filter needs to be replaced more frequently.

Cleaning the Door Sensor
1. Notice the four small holes in the top of the door for LED sensors: two holes toward
the back of the door and two holes near the front of the door. If these holes are
clogged with dust or other debris, the door sensors will fail to operate.
2. Use the can of compressed air to blow out the four holes and dislodge any debris.
Use a plastic attachment to direct air into the holes.
Note: The door sensor should be cleaned once every three months, at a
minimum.

Internal Maintenance and Cleaning
1. Use a large flat head screwdriver to remove the thumbscrews on the back of the
library.
Caution: The library contains static sensitive devices. Please use a static
dissipative wrist strap or other ESD equipment and tools for this
process.
2. Remove the cover by:
a. Sliding the cover backwards, then
b. Lifting up the cover.
3. Use a #1 Phillips screwdriver to loosen the two captive screws holding each drive in
place.

4. Slide the drives as far back as they will go, without removing the drive cables.
All drives in original positions.
All drives slid back.
Drive 2 slid back.

5. Use a #1 Phillips screwdriver with a long shaft to loosen the eight captive screws
holding the carousel to the library chassis.
Caution: Captive screws cannot be completely removed. Loosen the screws
sufficiently to disengage them from the chassis.
6. Rotate the robotic arm so that the gripper jaws point to the rear of the library, as
shown below; the carousel does not come out unless the gripper jaws face the rear
of the library.

Caution: Do not force the carousel out of the library. The base of the
robotic arm is not a circle, and the carousel does not lift straight
up and out. The carousel comes out easily if done correctly, as
outlined in Step 7, below.
7. Remove the carousel.
a. Lift the carousel up and off the guide pins, about 1/2 inch.
b. Lift the front of the carousel so that it is even with, or a little higher than, the
base of the robotic arm.
c. Move the carousel toward the rear of the library so that the front of the
carousel touches the robotic arm base.
d. Lift the rear of the carousel above the robotic arm base. The carousel should
now be clear of the robotic arm base.
e. Carefully lift the carousel up and out of the library.
8. Use a static-free vacuum cleaner to remove any debris from the bottom of the library.
9. Clean the tape guides in the carousel.
10. After vacuuming, use a can of compressed air to clean the boards, power supply,
components, and any section where a static-free vacuum might not be able to reach.
Caution: Blow dust and debris away from the tape drives.
