Recommended Installation Order of the Service

Utility Partition

Dell recommends installing the service utility partition from the Resource CD before

installing an operating system. Installing the service utility partition first ensures that

enough space is allocated for the system maintenance utilities.

System Status Indicators

The system's bezel has an indicator that can represent system status when the bezel is

installed. The indicator identifies whether the system is operating properly or needs

attention. A caution code identifies a problem with power supply, system or power-supply

fans, system temperature, hard drives, or expansion cards.

Table 1-2 lists the system status indicator codes.

Hard-Drive Indicator Codes

Each SCSI hard-drive carrier has two indicators: a busy indicator on the bottom and a

status indicator on the top. The indicators provide information on the status of the

respective hard drive.

Table 1-3 lists the drive indicator codes. Different codes display as drive events occur in the

system. For example, in the event of a hard-drive failure, the "drive fail" code appears. After

the drive is selected for removal, the "prepared for removal" code appears. After the

replacement drive is installed, the "Prepare for operation, drive online" code appears.

NOTE: The drive busy indicator identifies whether the hard drive is active on the SCSI bus. This

indicator is controlled by the hard drive.

Intel Server Management Software Options

The Lock Front Panel option does not change the status of the SD/INT button. This

button cannot be locked out.

After changing the system’s IP address, you must reboot the system. The Intel Server

Management software will not be available until you reboot the system.

Installing the PERC 4/DC Megaraid Driver

If you are using a RAID controller card with the Red Hat Linux operating system, you must

update the megaraid driver. Two methods for updating this driver are described below.

From the operating system, you may install the megaraid driver rpm from the Dell

PowerEdge 3250 PERC 4/DC CD. The megaraid driver rpm is also available on

support.dell.com. Perform the following steps to install the rpm:

1Ty p e cd /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS.

2Install the megaraid driver rpm by typing the following command:

rpm -ivh --force megaraid-1.18f-1.ia64.rpm

3Reboot your system to use this driver.

To install the PERC 4/DC drivers from EFI partition, use the PowerEdge 3250 PERC 4/DC

CD included with the kit and perform the following steps:

1Boot your system with the PowerEdge 3250 PERC 4/DC CD.

2From the EFI interface, select Boot from the CD.

3To use the default installation method, press <Enter> at the Boot prompt.

The default installation method installs an update megaraid driver that supports the

PERC 4/DC and allows you to use a USB diskette drive during installation.

4When the Installation Method screen appears, eject the CD and insert the Red Hat

Linux Advanced Server 2.1 CD 1 to complete the installation.

5Follow the installation instructions on the screen.

PERC 4/DC Interface Issues

The following issues exist when using a PERC 4/DC in Dell™ PowerEdge™ 3250 systems:

• <Ctrl><M> does not work properly when a USB keyboard is connected to the USB

port on the front of the system. You should connect a USB keyboard to one of the USB

connectors on the back of the system.

• <Ctrl><H> does not open the WebBIOS utility for configuring the PERC 4/DC.

You must use <Ctrl><M> to configure the PERC 4/DC.

• If the system hangs with the splash screen displayed, press <ESC> to clear the splash

screen.

Tape Drive Support for Windows Operating

Systems

To support an optional tape drive, install the SDLT driver from the Resource CD. For

Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition, 64-Bit version, the ntbackup.exe tape backup

utility may stop and give the following error message:

The device reported an error on a request to write data to

media. Error reported: invalid command.

If this message appears, see Microsoft Knowledge Base Quick Fix 817688 located on the

Microsoft website at www.microsoft.com for more information.

Recovering Boot Options in System Setup

When the BIOS is recovered or updated, the system setup options are reset to the default

options. Before performing a BIOS recovery, write down the current configuration settings

so that you can restore the settings. The following sections give information on how to use

the EFI Boot Manager and how to reinstall boot options with the Windows and Red Hat

Linux operating systems.

The EFI Boot Manager menu allows you to access the operating systems installed on your

system, a Boot option maintenance menu, and the EFI shell.

Using the EFI Boot Manager

1Turn on your system by pressing the power button on the system’s front panel.

If your system is already on, reboot it.

2Wait until the system tests are completed.

The EFI Boot Manager screen appears.

From the EFI Boot Manager screen, you can select the following options:

• Operating systems installed on your system

• Boot option maintenance menu — Use this option to select boot devices and their

relative order.

Use the up- and down-arrow keys to navigate through the list. Press <Enter> to make a

selection.

Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition, 64-Bit Version Operating System

Perform the following steps to recover the boot options when running Windows.

1From the EFI Boot menu, select EFI Shell [Built In] and press <Enter>.

A list of devices are displayed.

2At the Shell> prompt, type FS0: and press <Enter>.

3Change the directory by typing cd efi\microsoft\winnt50 and pressing

<Enter>.

NOTE: If you have more than one drive and the files are not located in the directory above,

you may need to type FS1: and re-enter the command cd efi\microsoft\winnt50.

4Make note of the name of the boot file located in this directory.

5Ty p e \cd msutil.

6Run the nvrboot.efi utility.

7At the OS Boot Options Maintenance Tool, type Ifor Import.

8At the Enter IMPORT file path prompt, type

\efi\microsoft\winnt50\boot000

, where

is the number in the filename

that you noted in step 4.

9Press <Enter> to continue.

10 Reboot the system for the changes to take effect.

The EFI Boot menu now contains an option to launch Windows.

Red Hat Linux Advanced Server 2.1, 64-Bit Version Operating System

Perform the following steps to recover the boot options:

1From the EFI Boot Manager, select Boot option maintenance menu.

2Select Add a Boot Option.

3Select a volume.

4Select the directory for the EFI partition.

5Select the Red Hat directory.

6Select elilo.efi.

7Select N from Edit Existing Boot Option or make a new entry.

8At the Enter New Description prompt, type AS 2.1 (or the name of the operating

system).

9Under New BootOption Data, select the BootOption Data Type. Selections included

ASCII, Unicode, or No Boot Option.

Type the first character for the option you want to select or press <Enter> to select

the default. The default is Unicode.

10 At the Enter BootOption Data prompt, type AS 2.1 (or the name of the operating

system).

11 Ty p e Yto save the changes.

12 Reboot the system for the changes to take effect.
