Myrinet Interconnect Rack Kit Installation Guide

This document describes how to install the Myrinet interconnect rack kit into an HP

Cluster Platform using the HP Model 10642 rack. This kit is designed to support a Myrinet

interconnect with a 3U (5-slot) chassis or a 5U (9-slot) chassis. Larger models of Myrinet

interconnect require a different kit with a ventilating baffle.

1Audience

This guide is intended for HP service representatives and other persons trained

to install hardware mounting options and system components in the HP 10642

rack. Such persons are expected to understand the hazards of working in this

environment and of taking suitable precautions to minimize danger to themselves

and to others.

3Verifying the Kit Contents

The kit contains the following components:

• A pair of rails that you mount on the columns of the rack.

• A pair of left and right retainer brackets that you mount on the Myrinet

chassis. These brackets slide onto the rails.

•The fasteners, as specified in Table 1.

4Orienting the Components

The kit hardware consists of a pair of rails and a pair of left and right retainer

brackets, which are described in the following sections.

4.1 Rail

The two rails are identical, and one rail is shown in Figure 1. The rails are

mounted on the rack columns by the four holes in the vertical surface identified by

callout 1. The rail’s horizontal surface (callout 2) supports the interconnect chassis.

4.2 Retainer Brackets

The retainer brackets are shown in Figure 2.

When attaching the brackets, be aware that their designation of left and right is

in reference to their location on the rear of the switch chassis, not in reference to

the rack columns. Figure 2shows the following details, which are referenced

in the installation procedure:

1. Threaded inserts (callout 1).

2. Holes for the screws that attach the bracket to the interconnect chassis

(callout 2).

3. Channel that slides on to the rack-mounted rail, and the direction of insertion

(callout 3).

5Preparing for Installation

To install the kit, you require the following resources:

• Tools:

- A 6-inch long #1 (small) Phillips (Posidrive) screwdriver.

- A 6-inch long #2 (medium) Phillips (Posidrive) screwdriver.

- Cage-nut insertion tool (optional).

To prevent screws from becoming loose because of vibration, HP recommends

that you use an adjustable torque driver set to the torque specifications given

in Table 1.

• Environment:

- A work surface adjacent to the installation rack.

- A small work platform or stable stepladder or step stool.

- Personnel – HP recommends that two people are available to lift and install

the interconnect onto its rail.

6Identifying the Installation Location

Each 1U rack location is numbered 01–42 from the bottom to the top and is marked

on the rack columns. At each rack location, there are three square mounting holes,

which are identified as top, middle, and bottom. A fastener location is specified as

10–middle, meaning the middle hole of rack position 10.

The installation location depends on the configuration rules for your cluster. (See

Section 2for information about where you can obtain documentation resources).

Each component occupies a specific rack location so that the cabling is correct, and

the rack locations of each component are defined in the cluster documentation. For

ease of reference, mark the positions for fasteners with tape or a marker pen.

You can use this kit with both 3U and 5U Myrinet interconnects. The most common

location for these interconnects is at rack position 0, at the very bottom of the rack.

(This installation guide shows the interconnect installed at rack position 0, using

the 0–middle and 0–top mounting holes.)

7Installing the Rail

Working from the rear of the rack, install the left rail as shown in Figure 3.

1. Locate the marked mount location.

2. Clip a cage nut into the back of the middle and top holes of both the front and

rear columns, using a total of four nuts.

3. Using a #1 Phillips screwdriver, secure the rail to the rack columns with a

M6 x 16-mm pan-head screw.

4. Repeat steps 1–3 for the right rail.

8Installing the Retainer Brackets

Attach the retainer brackets to the interconnect chassis as shown in Figure 4.

_______________________ CAUTION _______________________

Use only the specified screws. Screws that are too long might penetrate

the switch chassis and damage internal components.

1. Identify the two screw hole locations, as shown in Figure 4. Depending

on which type of interconnect you are installing, use the following mount

locations:

a. To attach the bracket to a 5U (9-slot, 64-port) interconnect, use the screw

location indicated by callout 1. (The top round hole in the bracket.)

b. To attach the bracket to a 3U (5-slot, 32-port) interconnect, use the screw

location indicated by callout 2. (The elongated hole in the middle of the

bracket.)

2. Use a #1 Phillips screwdriver to secure the retainer bracket to the interconnect

chassis with 2 6-32 x .375 in Phillips screws.

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the right retainer bracket.

9Inserting the Chassis Into the Rack

You insert the interconnect chassis from the rear of the rack, with its front panel

(the connection ports) facing the rear of the rack, as shown in Figure 5. (All

cabling is done at the rear of the rack.)

_______________________ WARNING ______________________

The HP 10642 rack is tall. To avoid injury, always use two people

and a stable, elevated work platform to lift any components at a high

position in the rack.

1. Locate and mark the rear column mounting locations as follows:

a. To attach the bracket to a 5U (9-slot, 64-port) interconnect, position the

fasteners at locations 1-middle and position 5-middle.

b. To attach the bracket to a 3U (5-slot, 32-port) interconnect, position the

fasteners at locations 1-middle and position 3-middle.

2. Insert an M6 cage nut into the back of the rack at each fastener location,

using a total of four cage nuts.

3. Lift and align the interconnect so that the retainer brackets are level and

square with the rails, as shown in Figure 6.

4. Slide the interconnect chassis in until its front brackets stop against the rear

rack columns. (Callout 1in Figure 5identifies the left front bracket.)

5. Using a #2 Phillips screwdriver and two M6 x 16-mm pan-head screws per

bracket, secure each front bracket to the cage nuts that are mounted on the

rack columns (see callout 2in Figure 5). Use atotal of four screws and

tighten the screws to their specified torque.

10 Securing the Chassis to the Rail

Working at the front of the rack, secure the interconnect chassis to the rail, as

shown in Figure 7.

1. Using a #2 Phillips screwdriver and two M6 x 12-mm pan-head screws secure

the left retainer bracket to the rail through the threaded inserts in the bracket.

2. Repeat step 1 for the right retainer bracket, using a total of four screws.

Tighten the screws to their specified torque.

11 Removing the Interconnect for Servicing

Bring the cluster to an appropriate state for switch component removal and put the

rack into a safe and stable state for component removal.

_______________________ WARNING ______________________

The HP 10642 rack is tall. To avoid potential injury, always use two

people and a stable, elevated work platform to remove components

from a high rack elevation.

1. At the rack’s power distribution unit (PDU), power off the circuit that supplies

power to the interconnect. Disconnect the power cable at the rear of the

interconnect chassis.

2. If necessary, mark the high-speed network cables to ensure that they can be

reconnected to their respective ports.

3. Disconnect and remove each high-speed network cable bundle until all ports

are unplugged. Secure the cables out of the interconnect’s removal path.

4. Depending on whether you are performing a complete disassembly or only

replacing a defective chassis, perform one of the following steps:

a. Disassemble the installation

Use a #2 Phillips screwdriver to remove the four M6 x 12-mm Phillips

pan-head screws that secure each retainer bracket to the rail. The bracket

remains attached to the interconnect chassis (see Figure 7).

b. Replace a chassis

Use a #1 Phillips screwdriver remove the four 6-32 x .375 in Phillips

pan-head screws that secure each retainer bracket to the chassis. The

bracket remains attached to the rail (see Figure 4).

5. Remove the two M6 x 16-mm pan-head screws from each front bracket (see

Figure 5, callout 1).

6. Slide the interconnect chassis all the way out of the rack.

Carefully retain all screws for reuse if the interconnect chassis is to be remounted

or if it is replaced. Use only the 6-32 x .375 in Phillips pan-head screws to attach

the retainer brackets to the chassis. Use of incorrect screws might damage internal

components.
